Workshops for Teachers

Trees For Tomorrow offers teachers a variety of nature-oriented courses to provide an invigorating way to earn university credit or continue professional development.

Reptiles and Amphibians

June 16-18, 2008
Meet many of Wisconsin’s native amphibians and reptiles. Learn about their biology and natural history, conservation, survey techniques and more!  Learn also about the care and handling of classroom animals. Registration fee: $50. Instruction fee: $200 (includes registration fee). One graduate credit optional: additional $90.

Bats

June 18-20, 2008
Explore the world of these fascinating creatures in the classroom and in the field. Learn the basics of bat biology, taxonomy, life history, and echolocation. Even visit local bat roosts. Registration fee: $50. Instruction fee: $200 (includes registration fee). One graduate credit optional: additional $90.

Birding By Habitat

June 23-27, 2008
North country birding designed for birders of all levels. Learn basic bird biology, bird identification, and the importance of birds within natural communities. Instruction fees for the first 15 teachers provided by a grant from teh Kaytee Avian Foundation. Registration fee: $50. Two graduate credits optional: additional $90 each.

Forest Flora

July 14-18, 2008
Forest floors of the north country are carpeted with both flowering and non-flowering plants. You will identify plants; dig into soils; and explore a variety of sites. Registration fee: $50. Instruction fee: $250 (includes registration fee). One graduate credit optional: additional $90.

Exploring Natural Resource Issues through Service Learning

July 21-25, 2008
This two-part workshop (summer 2008 and summer 2009) will provide an introduction to the foundation of service learning projects, resources and programs available, and immerse teachers in an actual service learning project. All fees, three graduate credits, and a $500 stipend to be used for a service project is provided by the Toyota Foundation for each participant. Registration fee: $50.

Nature Photography

Head out into the beautiful Northwoods to learn how to take photos of waterfalls, wetlands, sunsets, and close-ups. Learn about all aspects of photography such as lighting, exposure, & basic photo editing on the computer. Registration fee: $50. Instruction fee: $250 (includes registration fee). One graduate credit optional: additional $90.

Herbs and Medicinal Folklore

July 28-30, 2008

Learn how to create your own herbal future! Explore the basics of herbal usage as cleaning products, personal care products, garden plants, as well as kitchen products. Registration fee: $50. Instruction fee: $200 (includes registration fee). One graduate credit optional: additional $90.

Advanced Field Forestry

July 28-August 1, 2008

This workshop will provide teachers with field based, advanced training in sustainable forest management. Visit logging sites, meet FISTA representatives, wildland fire specialists, and study woodland invasives. All fees and three graduate credits provided by a Wisconsin Environmental Education Board (WEEB) grant for each participant. Registration fee: $50.

North Country Wetlands

August 4-8, 2008
Get your feet wet! Learn to identify plants in bogs, wet meadows, streams, lakes, and swamps while discovering their strategies for survival. Registration fee: $50. Instruction fee: $250 (includes registration fee). One graduate credit optional: additional $90.

Note: Courses are subject to change based on enrollment.

Registration
Trees For Tomorrow offers a scholarship or grant money to all certified, practicing teachers to cover up to $200 of the expenses for the delicious meals and comfortable lodging during the workshop. Teachers are only responsible for the paying the following (unless otherwise noted in workshop description):

  • a non-refundable $50 registration fee for each workshop;
  • a $200 instruction fee (includes registration fee) for each three-day workshop;
  • a $250 instruction fee (includes registration fee) for each five-day workshop;
  • an additional $90 for each graduate credit (optional).

Note: Please carefully review each workshop description for specific information regarding the other requirements as well as grant stipends.

Credit criteria and complete workshop information will be distributed after the registration information and reservation fee are received. Full payment for all workshops is due 30 days prior to the start of the workshop.

Instructors
All instructors are carefully selected based on their knowledge, experience, and ability to teach adult groups. Trees For Tomorrow staff have taken courses in each area of instruction to provide participants with a high quality learning experience.

Dining
Homecooked meals are prepared by the Trees For Tomorrow chef and dining staff and served in the historic dining hall on campus. A social hour is held prior to dinner on the first evening so that workshop participants have an opportunity to relax and discuss the events of the day with each other.

Lodging
Guests staying at Trees For Tomorrow will find the facilities to have the rustic charm of a Northwoods lodge. Each dormitory style building has a central lounge, a fireplace, and central bathrooms. Guests can request a private room or may choose to share a room with another participant.
