SUMMER OUTREACH NATURALIST

Job Description:
Trees For Tomorrow is seeking a highly motivated individual to fill our temporary intern position for the summer of 2012. The Summer Outreach Naturalist will provide quality natural resources and outdoor education programs to the public at area resorts, campgrounds, and on Trees For Tomorrow’s beautiful campus. He or she will work side by side with professional Naturalists working with school and adult groups on campus throughout the summer. Must effectively work well with people of all ages in a variety of settings, and represent Trees For Tomorrow in a professional manner. Dates of employment: May 17 - August 17, 2012.
Job Duties:
- Participate in training at the beginning of summer and throughout the season which includes their first week of shadowing groups with our full time Naturalists.
- Create and implement new nature programs for people of all ages.
- Visit each site assigned once or twice a week to conduct a naturalist program on varying topics.
- Create simple posters advertising the following week’s program for each site to post and/or distribute to guests.
- Assist Trees For Tomorrow staff with programming for summer groups.
- Maintain organized records for each site on relevant program and travel information and report this information in a timely manner.
Job Requirements:
- Minimum of junior status in a natural resources related field such as, but not limited to environmental education, outdoor education, biology, and parks and recreation management.
- Previous programming experience with children, families, and/or adults.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Excellent communication skills with a variety of audiences and in a variety of situations including hikes, campfires, interactive lectures, active events, and power point presentations.
- High motivation, organization and ability to work independently.
- Basic computer skills.
- Ability to work outside in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to be flexible with schedules

SEASONAL NATURALIST PROGRAM
Seasonal Naturalist (4) available for the 2012-2013 School Year beginning August 26, 2012.
2 nine-month positions will run through May 24, 2013.
2 twelve-month positions will run through August 16, 2013.
Trees For Tomorrow is seeking highly motivated individuals who would like to gain experience teaching people of all ages about the wise use and proper management of natural resources. Our seasonal naturalists are career development positions which let you experience first hand whether teaching about and in the outdoors is for you. You will work side-by-side with professional foresters, naturalists and environmental educators. You will also meet a variety of professionals in the natural resources and environmental fields that we rely on for expert advice and assistance.
The program begins with extensive training in our curriculum. Soon you will also be giving evening naturalist programs, teaching a variety of indoor and outdoor classes, and assisting with other duties on which our school depends.
During the winter you will be teaching cross-country ski techniques and leading ski tours that blend in natural resource education. You will ski a variety of superb Northwoods trails with groups ranging in age from upper elementary to Road Scholar/Elderhostel® participants.
By spring you will be teaching a host of other programs. You will learn to lead bog studies, Northwoods tree identification, orienteering, wildlife programs on wolves, beaver, and bats, as well as water resource activities on area lakes and rivers. Project or curriculum plans will be finalized and you will be assisted with completing them by late spring.
Experience Gained:
- Teaching a variety of educational activities for diverse audiences, both inside and outside.
- Designing and developing an interpretive project or educational curriculum activity for use in the ongoing programs at Trees For Tomorrow.
- Having your teaching style evaluated by professional staff.
- Keeping a daily log of your experiences and development.
- Learning about the natural history and resource management techniques of Wisconsin's Northwoods.
- Writing for Northbound, a quarterly news magazine, about natural resource and environmental issues published by Trees For Tomorrow.
- Gaining computer and audio-visual skills.
- Networking with resource professionals from the U.S. Forest Service, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, and a variety of forest products industries, to gain a perspective on natural resource careers.
- Additional learning opportunities through off-site educational workshops, in-house special programs and staff enrichment sessions.
- Making new friends and lifelong memories while doing a little hard work in Wisconsin's Northwoods!
- Meeting course requirements as requested by your college or university, if necessary.

Qualifications:

A willingness to learn is the most important ingredient! Cross-country ski experience is a plus but much can be learned at Trees For Tomorrow.

High motivation to learn and teach about natural resources, coupled with good people skills, are the real keys.
- A positive attitude and ability to work well with others.
- An ability to communicate to a variety of ages and backgrounds.

Students at the junior or senior level of college with backgrounds in biology, environmental education, natural resources, outdoor recreation, or other natural sciences required.

Recent graduates preferred.
- First Aid/CPR certification valid through employment term.
