OUTREACH NATURALIST INTERNSHIP
Job Description:
Provide quality natural resources and outdoor education programs to the public at area resorts and campgrounds. Effectively work with people of all ages in a variety of settings, and represent Trees For Tomorrow in a professional manner. Dates of employment: May 24th-August 21, 2010.
Job Duties:
- Participate in training at the beginning of summer and throughout the season.
- Visit each site at scheduled time throughout the week to conduct a naturalist program on varying topics.
- Create simple posters advertising the following week’s program for each site to post and/or distribute to guests.
- Create and maintain open communication and rapport with resort owners and guests.
- Work on and implement new programs throughout the summer.
- Maintain records for each site on relevant program and travel information.
Job Requirements:
- A willingness to learn and teach!
- A positive attitude and ability to work well with others as well as independently.
- An ability to communicate to a variety of ages.
- Recent college degree or working towards a degree in biology, forestry, wildlife, environmental education, natural resources, outdoor recreation, or other related field required. Career path transitioners are also welcome to apply.
- First Aid/CPR certification valid through employment term.
- A valid driver’s license
- An interest in having fun while sharing your knowledge with others!
Salary:
$850/month plus room and board.

SEASONAL NATURALIST PROGRAM
Seasonal Naturalist (4) available for the 2010-2011 School Year: August 22, 2010 through May 27, 2010.
Trees For Tomorrow is seeking highly motivated individuals who would like to gain experience teaching people of all ages about the wise use and proper management of natural resources. Our seasonal naturalists are career development positions which let you experience first hand whether teaching about and in the outdoors is for you. You will work side-by-side with professional foresters, naturalists and environmental educators. You will also meet a variety of professionals in the natural resources and environmental fields that we rely on for expert advice and assistance.
The program begins with extensive training in our curriculum. Soon you will also be giving evening naturalist programs, teaching a variety of indoor and outdoor classes, and assisting with other duties on which our school depends.
During the winter you will be teaching cross-country ski techniques and leading ski tours that blend in natural resource education. You will ski a variety of superb Northwoods trails with groups ranging in age from upper elementary to Exploritas® participants.
By spring you will be teaching a host of other programs. You will learn to lead bog studies, Northwoods tree identification, orienteering, wildlife programs on wolves, beaver, and bats, as well as water resource activities on area lakes and rivers. Project or curriculum plans will be finalized and you will be assisted with completing them by late spring.
Experience Gained:
- Teaching a variety of educational activities for diverse audiences, both inside and outside.
- Designing and developing an interpretive project or educational curriculum activity for use in the ongoing programs at Trees For Tomorrow.
- Having your teaching style evaluated by professional staff.
- Keeping a daily log of your experiences and development.
- Learning about the natural history and resource management techniques of Wisconsin's Northwoods.
- Writing for Northbound, a quarterly news magazine, about natural resource and environmental issues published by Trees For Tomorrow.
- Gaining computer and audio-visual skills.
- Touring other Wisconsin environmental centers to gain ideas for programs, projects and future employment.
- Networking with resource professionals from the U.S. Forest Service, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, and a variety of forest products industries, to gain a perspective on natural resource careers.
- Additional learning opportunities through off-site educational workshops, in-house special programs and staff enrichment sessions.
- Making new friends and lifelong memories while doing a little hard work in Wisconsin's Northwoods!
- Meeting course requirements as requested by your college or university, if necessary.

Qualifications:

A willingness to learn is the most important ingredient! Cross-country ski experience is a plus but much can be learned at Trees For Tomorrow.

- A positive attitude and ability to work well with others.
- An ability to communicate to a variety of ages and backgrounds.

Students at the junior or senior level of college with backgrounds in biology, environmental education, natural resources, outdoor recreation, or other natural sciences required.

Recent graduates preferred.
